Console VS PC: The Great Un-Debate

*Disclaimer – This post as well as all other posts on this blog, are merely an expression of the authors thoughts and opinions on certain topics of gaming…and should be viewed as such (in other words, take everything you read with a grain of salt). Whether you agree or disagree, let’s have a conversation in a respectful manner! Otherwise negative comments will be ignored*

It’s a debate that has gone on as long as I can remember…an epic power struggle between console and PC gamers fighting for supremacy in the gaming spotlight.

It makes one think of an epic battle scene straight from a fantasy novel…two sides, both populated with armies of massive scale, rushing towards each other with blades drawn…battle cries escape their lips, coming together to form a thunderous roar as they collide in the center of the battlefield…

Just like the whole Batman VS. Superman debate…I think it’s all stupid…

Don’t get me wrong…there are some clear advantages on both sides of the fence here…but having walked the line for as long as I have….I’ve come to have an appreciation for both!

Having stated that…I’d like to proceed with my great UN-debate…instead of favoring one side over the other, or pointing out flaws…I want to highlight the reasons I enjoy both console and PC gaming…not start yet another flame war.

For those who aren’t familiar with the term…the officially unofficial definition of Flame War is:

…a heated argument between two individuals, that results in those involved posting personal attacks on each other during or instead of debating the topic at hand.”

• Graphics / Performance

Moving right along…let’s start with the most obvious difference between the two…the graphics. Depending on your setup, a PC will generally have far far superior graphics to that of consoles..however on the other hand, after seeing in game footage from titles such as Last Of Us, and The Order 1886, I can safely say that I was definitely blown away by the graphical capabilities of consoles today!

Also, after a certain level of detail, and resolution…It stops mattering as much to me on a personal level…in fact some of my favorite games to play lately have minimal graphic intensity. My best example would be Terraria, which is essentially 2-D Minecraft…but I’m saving my thoughts on that for another time…digressing

Cost

This point is becoming less and less relevant…Consoles used to be the more affordable option for gaming, however considering how fast technology is advancing, with a little patience, and proper timing, one can easily build a capable “console killer” PC for $400-$600 (just search YouTube, you’ll be amazed at some of the builds that are out there).

• Exclusive Titles

Ah yes, exclusive titles…now I’m pretty new to PC gaming, but from what I have seen in the past…consoles have more than their fair share of exclusive titles…however I think the same can be said for PC…as some games require a mouse and a keyboard, or very lofty system requirements to most effectively play the game…The Elder Scrolls series was a PC exclusive up until Morrowind when it was finally released on the original Xbox, which was when I was first introduced to this amazing series!

Convenience VS. Multitasking

A good fried of mine once said “Consoles are just dumb PCs” and to this I cannot disagree…consoles have processors, hard drives, power supplies…etc…they are essentially small computers in that of themselves. The plus side of this is that they can specialize on bringing gaming into a convenient package that you can easily plug and play into your living room television, power it on, and get to gaming!

PC’s are like the jack-of-all-trades…you can game, you can check email, download and listen to music, create and render graphics, edit video, etc etc etc…

Again don’t get me wrong! The capabilities of consoles are growing year by year, music and video streaming, video calling, as well as web browsing have been added to the list of capabilities of consoles, and I’m really excited to see just how much they will advance…

Those are the main points I wanted to cover…since they are the main ones that are typically brought up…If this post is swaying you one way or the other…you’re reading it wrong! I’m merely trying to state the reasons, why I personally enjoy both!

To be honest, in the last 6 months, I switched over to team PC, the main reason being, because it suits my current needs.

I would love to have an Xbox One AND a PS4 as well as a gaming PC, because sometimes I just want to pick up a controller, sit on the couch and game it up for a few hours…which dosen’t have the same feel when doing so from my desk chair (not trying to take away from PC gaming at all, it’s just a matter of comfort at this point) In fact…as long as it’s an option…most of the time I prefer to play with a gamepad….

Like I said earlier…I walk the line! So call me the Johnny Cash of casual gaming! Instead of fighting over which platform is better…we should be uniting over the fact that we all share the common interest of gaming!

I know this was a long one, so thanks for reading the whole thing y’all! I appreciate the support, I really do. I love interacting with my fellow nerds, geeks, and gamers.

What are your thoughts on the matter? Are you a PC console gamer? Or are you both!?Shoot me a message and lets have a chat! Let’s keep it clean civil and flame free though!

  1. The way I see it, there are some games that are better played on a console while others are more suited for the PC. I couldn’t imagine playing Planescape: Torment or any RTS on a console. As a counterexample, I’ve found I’m much better at platforming games when I’m using a controller and not a keyboard. Plus, some people like games, but don’t have the resources to constantly upgrade their computers; for them, getting consoles is the only choice that makes sense. Both have advantages and disadvantages, but which one each gamer decides to go with should depend on personal preference. I personally find myself switching between the two. It’s kind of a silly debate, really.

  2. Being a PC gamer for 10 years, I think whenever Console vs PC debate comes up PC will always has an edge.
To simplify things, imo, for FPS – nothing beats keyboard & mouse, for everything else – controller.

    1. I cannot disagree with you on that one! As good as I had gotten with a gamepad from owning consoles for many years. As soon as I started using mouse and keyboard, it was like night and day.
